I had my first photo-shoot last friday, i enjoyed the experience thoroughly and found that Photo shoots can be very hectic and frantic. I thought that taking certain photo's were very difficult and didn't like how rushed the experience was. In the end i have got the photographs i waned but i feel that the photographs i took were not perfect nor the right shot for a front cover. For future reference i will take a lot more photographs when in the photo-shoot, while also preparing before hand for my model to have specific clothes for a certain look.
You are right in assuming you should take lots of shots. From a simple shoot you should have around 15-20 shots of various angles and poses. From your main photoshoot it would not be unreasonable to have 100+ to look through.
